Each October, the National Disability Employment Awareness Month campaign is held to create awareness about disability employment issues. It also celebrates the value added by those disabled veterans and disabled workers that have joined the workforce.

Each year, there is a theme, and this year it is “Expect. Employ. Empower.” TAD PGS recently touched on National Disability Employment Awareness Month and some of the companies that are pledging to help. NDEAM roots go back to 1945 when Congress enacted a law where in the first week of October each year, it was “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. It has since expanded to create more awareness.

This year is a little more poignant as on October 5th, 2014, there was the first  dedication memorial in the United States honoring disabled veterans and their service. This marked an extremely important day for those disabled vets and it only makes sense it was unveiled in the month of October. The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial spans 2.4 acres and is a reminder of the cost of freedom for our country.

As the veteran unemployment rate drops, those who have suffered life changing injuries still struggle to find jobs. The unemployment is three to eight times higher than other veterans and that is something that needs to be changed.
